Scientific word of the day: Benthic

Benthic

Benthic is an ecological zone referinng  with the bottom of the ocean. Those that live in the bottom of the ocean are benthos, this can include plants and animals (NOAA Ocean Service) .

Most animals that are benthos are invertebrates (NOAA Ocean Explorer)  . This includes such animals as crabs, lobserts, sponges, brittle stars, snails, shrimps and other small organisms such as bivalves. This types of animals are far more abundant in the shallow waters of the coasts (Narrangasett Bay Commission)
